European U21 Championship semi-final: Portugal – Germany

The last group matches decided who will play the semi-finals at the European U21 Championship in the Czech Republic. Despite another solid performance, the host team were knocked-out as they only managed to draw against Germany. In their second game, the Portugal side took on another favourite of the group Italy. The Italians asserted their authority for most of the match but as they failed to score the coveted goal, the Portuguese gained another point for a goalless draw. In the final duel of the group, Jorge´s side battled it out against Sweden in what ended up as another draw. The Portuguese youngsters got their rivals under pressure and they even took the lead in the 82nd minute but the Swedes managed to level just a few minutes later. Thanks to the result of the other match between England and Italy that was favourable to both sides, the draw was enough for both Portugal and Sweden to progress from the group. In the semi-final, the Portuguese will face Germany against whom they have a good record, beating them in last two head-to-head games. Germany U21 Championship

Considered the biggest favourite of the tournament, the Germans started out with an unconvincing 1:1 draw against Serbia in their opener. Motivated by this unexpected point-loss, the German U21 squad dominated in their second game, hammering Denmark 3:0. After this great performance, they were expected to beat the hosts as well. However, encouraged by their spectacular victory over Serbia, the Czechs showed no respect to the Germans and they played very well, especially in the second half. It were the German team who opened the score with 55 minutes on the clock but the host side managed to answered back soon after. Knowing the draw would be enough for them to qualify, the Germans focused on defence for the rest of the game and they managed to defend the tie. Unbeaten in all three group matches, the German deservedly advanced to the semi-final where they will take on Portugal who is not their favourite rival as they only gained one victory over them in the last four head-to-head games.
